In House Test Report - Stanley Hand Tools

Objective

Provide Stanley Tools with a superior belt that cuts more metal, last longer with a similar finish to the current 3M Trizact 217EA A45 belt.   

 

Summary

It was found that a “dressed” 240# compact grain belt (JG530) gave a much higher cut rate and similar finish (Ra) to 3M’s Trizact.

Test Method

The test was preformed using a modified back stand belt grinder, operating at 4,189 surface feet per minute. The belts tested were ARC’s aluminum oxide J weight compact grain belts (JG530) in 320 and 240 grit, against 3Ms 217EA A45Trizact belt. The test consisted of grinding a piece of A2 tool steel for one minute and then weighing it, and repeating those steps for 30 minutes to confirm the amount of metal cut in 30 minutes time 240 grit compact grain was only tested for 20 minutes because the cut trend was much higher than Trizact. To dress the 240 grit belt we ran the belt on the machine and sanded the surface to make it flat. The belt originally weighed 115.9g and the dressing process removed 17.3g.

 

Results

The ARC JG530 belt is twice the weight of the 3M Trizact belt. So even though it wears at a faster rate the lifetime will still be longer.

 

Conclusions

ARC recommends that Stanley test our AO dressed compact grain 240 grit belt JG530.
